CRT, VHS & Databending

Everything in this category attacks the format rather than the picture. Databending - opening an image as though it were text, corrupting some bytes and opening it again - is where glitch art came from, and these effects are that idea made controllable: JPEG Artifact Amplifier finds the compression blocks a real JPEG is built from and exaggerates them, Bitplane Slicer takes the image apart by bit position, and Protocol Corruption and Packet Drop damage it the way a lossy transmission does.

CRT / VHS is the analog half. Scanlines, phosphor bleed, chroma smear, tracking error and head switching noise are all things a cathode ray tube and a video tape genuinely did, and they are what most people picture when they think of a glitched video.

These are the effects that gain the most from being applied to video rather than a still, since several of them are about what happens between one frame and the next. Bring in an MP4, WebM or MOV, glitch it in real time, and export the whole clip or just the section you pick.

Every format effect

Each preview is the same source photograph with that one effect applied at its default settings. In the editor every one of them has its own full set of controls.

How these work in the editor

  • Stack them. Effects run in order down a stack, and the order changes the result - a sort after a warp is not the same picture as a warp after a sort.
  • Mask them. Any effect can be limited to part of the image by brightness, hue, saturation, detail, color key or gradient, or driven by a depth, edge, flow or segmentation map read from the image itself, another layer, or a file you upload.
  • Paint them in. Soft erase and restore brushes take an effect out of the places you do not want it, on one effect or the whole stack.
  • Animate them. Any slider can be driven by sine, triangle, saw, ramp or hold motion, and exported as a clip that loops seamlessly.
  • Use them on video. Bring in MP4, WebM or MOV of any length and export WebM at up to 60 fps with the original audio carried through.
